Pandemic boosts the Italian health care digitalization

8.6.2020

Today was held a webinar of the Observatory of Politecnico di Milano about Health Digitalization called Innovazione digitale in sanità. The observatory is following the status and development of the Italian health care system and the digitalization within already for 13 years. This year has been certainly an exceptional year for the world wide pandemic influencing strongly the digitalization process not only in the health care field but in many other fields as well. My take-aways from the webinar today are various. I’m very happy to notice the positive digital boost the Covid19 crisis has generated in the health care in Italy. Especially the general practitioners have increased notably the use of virtual communication platforms and also telemedicine solutions. In general also the role of the so called territorial services were emphasized not only for the chronic patients but also for other patient groups. Virtualization of the medical practice includes various technologies for example chatbots, artificial intelligence, telemonitoring, telerehabilitation with serious games solutions and also blockchain for validation of suppliers or data. Spending in digital health solutions increased by 7% already in 2018, certainly the increase is even greater this year! I’m curious to follow how these technological innovations will evolve in the post-Covid period.
